'Teamwork makes the dreamwork'

Updated: Sep 24, 2021

Learning objectives:

LO 1: Understand that teamwork is important in healthcare

LO 2: Appreciate that the diverse set of roles in an MDT results in comprehensive healthcare delivery

Recommended study time: 6 minutes.

Throughout this eLearning session, we'll attempt to dissect the inner machinery behind successful teamwork in the context of 3 guiding principles; communication, respect and reflection. Hopefully by the end you'll feel confident as a team player and better equipped to contribute meaningfully during your placements and group projects.

1.1 Food for thought

"Winning is about having the whole team on the same page." - Bill Walton
"If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn't thinking." - George Patton

The above quotes highlight two commonly held yet contrasting schools of thought regarding teamwork. Walton focuses on unity as a key aspect whereas Patton champions diversity in thought. Trickily enough, to create a productive team both must coexist. While a shared vision is essential, individual creativity must flourish to ensure team growth.

1.2 What are the benefits of teamwork in healthcare?

1.3 Introducing Multidisciplinary Teams (MDTs)

Patients have complex healthcare needs. The multidisciplinary approach convenes various professionals across healthcare, social and community settings. These members, with their specialist knowledge and skills, assess, plan and manage patient care holistically. The end result is comprehensive, continuous and seamless patient care.

Let's gain some appreciation for MDT diversity by looking beyond the doctor and ward nurse. I asked some MDT members "Why is your role so important to the MDT?." Have a listen:

A few extra points:

  • MDT composition varies based on healthcare speciality and delivery model.

    • Eg. colorectal cancer MDT: Colorectal surgeon, oncologist, histopathologist, radiologist, social worker, Colorectal clinical nurse specialist, stoma care nurse, dietician, Palliative care

  • MDT's occur across primary, secondary and tertiary care.

Activity: Can you think of 2 other healthcare members and their MDT settings? List them in the comment section.

For eg. Podiatrist - Diabetes MDT
